I’ve been offline for several days-after putting in our garden, I put in our winter lawn. For those of you not familiar with winter lawns, we grow Bermuda grass in the summer and rye in the winter. Bermuda needs no maintenance. Rye, or winter grass, is a bit more work. You need to dethatch the Bermuda, seed, and then through as much steer manure as you can stand to keep the seed warm enough to regenerate, and to keep the birds away. Needless to say, although it is a labor of love for me (and my son Alex, who also loves the money he gets from me), it kills my back. That said, if my fitness level wasn’t up to it, I would contract it out. The job took about 10 hours over two days. I’m not kevetching, just talking.
I found out some neat stuff on food. I’m a big believer on using food as medicine, and these two articles bear me out.
From Dr. Oz’s website, Realage.com, reports that apples help lower cholesterol are posted. It appears that not only do apples help protect you against cancer and other diseases, it also appears to lower cholesterol. It’s very important to eat the skins. Some people peel them-the most beneficial nutrients are in the skin.
It appears that coconut oil can help in the fight against Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, etc. This from Dr. Whitaker. Coconut oil (non-hydrogenated) is made up of medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s). pre=””>MCT’s aren’t metabolized like the long-chain tri’s (beef, pork, veal fat) in that they are easily absorbed and metabolized in the liver. And, rather than being stored as fat, they are converted into ketones. Ketones acts as your body’s alternative energy source, after glucose. Rather than get into the biochemistry, I’ll just say this. In Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and other neurological diseases, neurons lose their ability to use glucose. Inability to efficiently use glucose is an early warning sigh of the disorders. Affected neurons can use ketones, however, and when they’re made available, starving brain cells eat them up. How much? The recommended dose od MCT’s for neurological (degenerative) disorders is 20 g per meal. Fish oil should also be taken.
Stay well, John R Blilie, M.S.
