I railed a bit against government health care but looking at the big picture, remember that your health is your responsibility. Prevention is and has always been the key. Eat a nutritious diet, exercise of some sort almost daily, and take your supplements.

I spoke a while back on one of the most preventable diseases which is approaching epidemic proportions in this country-type 2 diabetes. Oral diabetes medication is downright dangerous, and shooting yourself up with insulin is not only not fun, but usually leads to substantial weight gain. The best ways to fend off diabetes are: 1) eat healthy carbs. Vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fruits provide a slow release of glucose into the blood. Stay away from simple sugars and starches like white flour, potatoes, baked goods, corn, etc. 2) Eat good protein from lean meats and fish. Protein promotes the release of glucagon, a hormone produced by the pancreas that stimulates fat cells to break down into usable energy. 3) Exercise is good for every system in your body, and makes your muscles more receptive to taking glucose out of your bloodstream. 4) Use cinnamon, either a tsp daily or in capsule form. 5) Vanadium is the top mineral for controlling blood sugar-the best form is vanadyl sulfate at 100 mg/day.

I hope you have a nice weekend. It’s my last trip to the cabin this summer.

Stay well, John R Blilie, M.S.
