I have a colonoscopy coming up soon (always fun). The doctor’s office handed me a very comprehensive set of instructions for the prep before the colonoscopy, but no instruction on what to do after. I found an article by Karen Larson, former editor of Bottom Line personal. Bottom LineInc.com to be very helpful for what to do after.
- Drink eight to 16 ounces of fruit juice right after the procedure. Any beverage will help with dehydration, but fruit juice also wards off hypoglycemia. Drink another 48 ounces of fluid during the day and 64 ounces the day after.
- Eat a light snack as soon as you feel able. Bring a light sandwich or energy bar with you to the health facility, too. Avoid foods with high fat content; fats are difficult to digest.
- Take a probiotic supplement. Take one just before your first meal following the procedure and twice a day for the next 10 days at the start of a meal. You can also use fermented beet juice, sauerkraut, kimchi, or yogurt, to help repents friendly gut bacteria.
Stay well,
